NEW K-Ar ISOTOPIC AGES OF EPITHERMAL ALTERATION FROM THE TOODOGGONE RIVER AREA, BRITISH COLUMBIA

چکیده
This report presents three new potassium-argon isotopic age determinations of minerals associated with epithermal alteration from the Toodoggone district, north-central British Columbia. The Toodoggone area has received extensive exploration attention over the past 10 years. In addition to a former goldsilver producer (Baker mine), the district contains a major new gold-silver mine in development (Lawyers), several gold deposits undergoing final feasibility studies (Bonanza, BV and Thesis III), and numerous other precious metal prospects. Most of these deposits exhibit characteristics typical of epithermal mineralization. Schroeter (19X2) and Schroeter er al. (1986) have demonstrated that alteration associated with some of the occurrences is Early to Middle Jurassic in age. Further, Clark and Williams-Jones (1987, 1988) have suggested that gold-silver deposits in the Toodoggone area are restricted to mid-Toarcian (approximately 190 Ma) and older rocks, and represent a district-wide period of alteration and mineralization. The objective of the current study is to provide additional estimates of the age of epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Toodoggone district. The new data will contribute to ongoing research on the gold-silver metallogeny of the camp, to specific ore deposit genesis studies, and to the placement of the mineralization within a lithotectonic framework relevant to the exploration community.

Porphyry Cu and epithermal deposits are spatially and temporally related to specific volcanic and plutonic rocks emplaced during the formation of long-lived magmatic arcs formed along convergent plate boundaries (e.g., Sillitoe, 1972; Sutherland Brown, 1976; Titley, 1982; Sawkins, 1990; Bissig et al., 2003). Recognizing the presence, types of deposits, and age of the mineralized volcanoplutonic...

The Johanson Lake project is a two-year bedrock mapping program initiated by the Geological Survey and Development Branch in 2003 as part of the Toodoggone Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI). The project is focused on a belt of Mesozoic arc volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Quesnel Terrane in the eastern part of the McConnell Creek (94D) map sheet. This area contains a number of MINFILE occu...

During its 25 years of production from 1972 to 1998, the Gibraltar Cu-Mo mine in east-central British Columbia (Figure 1) milled a total of 324 million tons of ore containing an average 0.351% Cu from four open pits. Fieldwork during 2000 involved just over two weeks of detailed pit mapping at the mine. Results of this work and several earlier intervals of pit mapping conducted in 1998 and 1999...

Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios of 500 samples, mainly from granitic plutons, were measured along a 700-km, E-W traverse across the "accreted terranes" of southern British Columbia (latitudes 49ø-52øN). Despite the geological complexity and range of intrusive ages (Late Triassic to Tertiary) and although there are "steps" in the isotopic values at some geologic boundaries (e.g., across the S...
